How to Care for Your Laptop’s Battery

How to Care for Your Laptop’s Battery

In the past, laptops usually came with removable batteries that could be easily replaced if necessary. Nonetheless, with time, more and more laptops now feature a built-in battery, which can only be replaced by computer repair shops, which makes this change much more expensive, and keeps your battery alive and well more important than ever.

Therefore, we are going to tell you how to keep your laptop battery in good condition and maximize its life span.

How to Care for Your Laptop’s Battery and Extend Its Life

This text will explain what you need to do to keep your laptop battery in top condition, allowing you to use it for several years to come. You will be introduced to the most common methods for keeping your battery well, so you can use your laptop to its full potential. Let’s get started!

Lower the Number of Charging Cycles

Reducing the number of times your battery is charged is definitely one of the best ways to keep it in good condition. The batteries in today’s laptops are designed to withstand around 500 full charges, which means you can fully drain the battery to 0% and then charge it to 100% 500 times. Do not do this.

Today’s batteries are designed to work best with a little bit of discharge and a little bit of charge. This means they will have the longest lifespan if you let them drain to around 40% and then charge them to around 80%. Thus, you will not waste the entire charging cycle, but just a fraction, which ultimately will make your battery last longer, and allow between 850 and 1500 charges.

Windows 10’s Battery Saver feature will also help you keep the number of cycles at a minimum. This feature will disable push notifications, background app activity, calendar syncing, and many other battery-saving features when the battery falls below, for instance, 20% charge.

This is what you need to do:

1) First, go to Start:

Turn on Power Nap on your Mac to save battery life while keeping all your important tasks running.

If you are willing to do that this is what is needed to be done:

Don’t Charge it Too Late

As we’ve already mentioned, you shouldn’t let your battery fully discharge, as this will reduce its life expectancy. Never let your battery drop below 20% charge, and if it does, make sure you use the battery-saving features that will prevent complete drain.

If you won’t be using your laptop for some time, don’t fully charge it. When you plan to dispose of the battery for a few days or weeks, it should be at 50% charge. Due to some reason, such behavior will have the least negative effect on your battery characteristics and will keep your battery nice and healthy.

Don’t Keep the Laptop Constantly Plugged-in

Though today’s batteries are designed with the feature that stops the charging when the battery is 100% charged, preventing overheating and excessive power consumption, the fact remains that not charging and recharging your battery will eventually reduce its characteristics and give you a much lower level of autonomy.

Therefore, unplug your laptop whenever possible. Consider unplugging it after two hours of work and then putting it back on the charger when it’s needed.

Keep it Cool

Extreme heat and cold are not good for batteries, so chilly temperatures around 10°C -15°C will be the best.

You should give your laptop and battery a break if you are facing constant high CPU and GPU loads that constantly increase the laptop’s temperature, and let it cool off for a while.

Especially if you are a gamer who likes to play for hours, you should take short breaks between games to allow your battery to rest. Your battery life will be much better as a result.

Update OS on Regular Basis

Operating systems are constantly optimized in order to consume less and less power while delivering the same or better performance. Therefore, don’t overlook this detail and update your website regularly.
