Office Chairs vs Gaming Chairs : Which One is Best for You? [Guide – 2021]

Office Chairs vs Gaming Chairs : Which One is Best for You? [Guide – 2021]

Gaming chair? Office chair? There are so many options That was tough! What should you choose between gaming chairs and office chairs in the perennial battle? We’re going to examine the differences between the two in this post The “Chair  for gaming and Office Chairs and go over each options’ pros and cons so that you have a better idea of which option would be better for you.

1. Office Chairs and Gaming Chairs Have Completely Different Designs :

  1. Office chairs are designed to, first, be comfortable, and second look nice
  2. Gaming chairs are designed, first, to look cool, and second to be comfortable

The above statements are generally true, but there are, of course, exceptions to them. Some gaming chairs, like Vertagear’s Triigger 350 looks more like an ergonomic office chair than it does a traditional racing-style gaming chair.

And, there are definitely office chairs out there that focus more on the design of the chair than on the ergonomics and comfortability of the chair.

But, as a generality, the main selling point for gaming chairs is their cool-looking racing-style design and the main selling point for office chairs are their ergonomic-based design.

2. Which Chair Style Has the Better Design?

As you’ll see throughout this post, an individual’s preference for an office chair over a gaming chair, or vice-versa, will vary from person to person.

There are some really nice-looking office chairs on the market. People out there also believe that the more subtle nature of office chairs is better than the bold and flashy style of racing-style gaming chairs.

The reverse is also true. Many gamers prefer the racing-style design of gaming chairs. This is, in part, why they are so popular.

The bottom line is that it isn’t fair to say that gaming chairs look better than office chairs, since every individual will have a different opinion.

A gaming chair will likely appeal to you if you prefer a bold, colorful, and flashy design over an office chair.

You may prefer an office chair over a gaming chair if you prefer a more tame, minimalist, or conservative design.

3. Comfort Level Differences Between Gaming Chairs and Office Chairs

A common complaint about gaming chairs is that they aren’t as comfortable as office chairs.

However, in my experience sitting in a number of racing-style gaming chairs, as well as a few different mid-range office chairs, this statement isn’t entirely true.

The idea that gaming chairs aren’t comfortable typically occurs when people compare them to high-end ergonomic office chairs (like Herman Miller chairs or Steelcase chairs).

When people post in forums or on Reddit that they’re going to buy a gaming chair, you’ll often see responses such as these:

It’s a problem that a new Herman Miller chair can range anywhere from $600 to over $1,000, depending on the model. A typical gaming chair costs no more than $400.

In reality, the difference in comfortability between office chairs and gaming chairs isn’t as significant as some would have you believe when you get into the lower price ranges.

On average, and on a dollar-to-dollar basis, an office chair typically provides a higher level of comfort than a racing-style gaming chair. Again, the comfort difference between the two chair styles in the lower price ranges – where most people are looking – isn’t as great as you think.

“Gaming chairs are a scam.”. They’re uncomfortable. Get a Herman Miller instead.”

4. Chair Comfortability Can Vary from Individual to Individual

Additionally, most people have different preferences when it comes to what they consider to be a comfortable chair.

Take a look at the reviews on Amazon for the Herman Miller Aeron as an example. There are a lot of negative reviews that say that the chair was too hard for them to sit on and that they returned it. The same applies to many of the higher-end ergonomic office chairs.

The same is also true for gaming chairs. My reviews of different gaming chairs have led people to comment that they have the same chair and find it incredibly comfortable. Additionally, I have had users tell me that those chairs are extremely uncomfortable to sit in.

Because different people have different body types and preferences, a chair that might be comfortable for one person might not be comfortable for another.

The answer to the office chair vs gaming chair debate, in terms of comfortability, isn’t as clear-cut as just saying office chairs are more comfortable. There are comfortable office chairs and not-so-comfortable office chairs. Also, there are comfortable gaming chairs and not-so-comfortable gaming chairs.

You’ll also find that where one person may not find a chair comfortable, another might.

Generally speaking, office chairs offer better comfort than gaming chairs on a dollar-for-dollar basis. In lower price ranges, however, the comfort difference between office chairs and gaming chairs isn’t as significant as you might expect. Moreover, gaming chairs provide more comfort than similarly-priced office chairs in the lower-to-mid-range market.

5. Which Costs More? Gaming Chairs or Office Chairs?

Gaming chairs typically cost more than office chairs. Again, this is just a generalization. It’s not as simple as stating that gaming chairs cost more than office chairs.

For example, gaming chairs in the upper echelon will cost no more than $800. In addition, the majority of the top gaming chairs on the market will cost between $300 and $500.

However, the high-end market for ergonomic office chairs can get as high as $1,500 (Herman Miller Embody). This is nearly twice the price of the most expensive racing-style gaming chair, and 3-4x the price of a typical high-end gaming chair.

On the high-end scale of the market, office chairs are more expensive than gaming chairs.

In the low-end to midrange price range, gaming chairs are criticized for their price. Compared to a $150 gaming chair, a $150 office chair can be a very viable option over a few years, whereas $150 gaming chairs tend to be cheaply constructed.

When it comes to high-end chairs, the top-of-the-line ergonomic office chairs will cost a lot more than the top-of-the-line gaming chairs. Additionally, the top-of-the-line office chairs have a higher build quality than the top-of-the-line gaming chairs. In lower-end and mid-range markets, mid-range and cheaper office chairs will typically be less expensive than mid-range and cheaper gaming chairs.

6. Which Style of Chair Has More Adjustment Options?

Chair adjustment features can range from armrest adjustment, height adjustment, backrest adjustment (recline backward), and base tilt adjustment. These are really the main four adjustment features that computer chairs come with.

And, just like the sections above, there is no clear-cut winner between gaming chairs and office chairs on which style offers more adjustment features.

However, gaming chairs typically have more adjustment features that similarly-priced office chairs, simply because most racing-style gaming chairs include a recline feature (which office chairs don’t usually have). Even the cheaper gaming chairs on the market usually have a recline feature.

7. The Reclining Feature on Gaming Chairs is Actually A Useful Feature

The recline function found on gaming chairs doesn’t contribute to improved ergonomics. Additionally, most gamers will never recline a gaming chair in a fully reclined position to the point that this is a huge advantage over office chairs.

Most office chairs, however, do not allow you to recline the backrest even slightly. While some office chairs can tilt their backrests a bit, without constant pressure, the backrest will return to its upright position.

The ergonomics of sitting at a reclined angle and engaged in work-related tasks are probably not ideal. The ability to recline a bit in a gaming chair and get comfortable is an advantage that gaming chairs have over traditional office chairs for gamers and content consumers.

The recline feature is more rare to find on an office chair (especially in the lower-to-midrange price ranges) than it is on a gaming chair.

8. For All Other Features, It’s A Wash

In the event that we take a gaming chair’s ability to recline backward out of the equation, the comparison of which chair has more adjustment options becomes more even.

Typically, office chairs and gaming chairs offer similar adjustments for each price range. On office and gaming chairs, 4D armrests (armrests that can move up and down, forward and backward, side to side, and at an angle) become prevalent around the $300 mark.

The armrests of either style of chair can only be adjusted up or down if they are less than that height.

Gaming chairs and office chairs that tilt at the base and rock are available for under $300. In price ranges above $300, you will find options in both chair styles that allow you to lock your chair at a tilted angle.

Any chair you buy, whether it is a low-cost office chair or a mid-range gaming chair, will allow you to adjust the height.

In terms of overall adjustment features, the fact that most gaming chairs have a recline feature gives them an edge over cheaper models. In spite of that, most people probably won’t use the recline feature (which makes it more of a novelty for those types of users), making the adjustment features on gaming chairs and office chairs pretty similar from a dollar-to-dollar standpoint.

9. Office Chair or Gaming Chair? Which One is Right for You

If you came here looking for a definitive answer on which style of chair is better for you, you might be disappointed.

However, in my opinion, the reality is that office chairs and gaming chairs are designed for two specific types of users. If you are a gamer, and you like how the racing style gaming chairs look, then my suggestion is to get one that has good reviews and try it out. If you don’t like it, send it back.

And, if you’re someone who doesn’t care about, or who doesn’t like the racing style design of gaming chairs, just go with an office chair. It’s really that simple.
